#Black Lives Matter

By Summer Rainey

"Rest in Peace to those who lost their lives to racism and police brutality

But how we saying “Black Lives Matter” living life with a messed up mentality

We supposed to be invincible and come together as one..

But instead we hurting each other

Giving glory to all the wrong others have done

Ya’ll dont remember?..

We’re kings and Queens but we keep knocking each other down

This is our Earth… This is our kingdom

But we seem to have lost our crown

Time is ticking.. It’s almost up

We need to right our wrongs

Let's stand together.. Stand as one

And take back our throne"

Artist Statement by By Summer Rainey

"For my poem “Black Lives Matter”, I actually wrote it out of nowhere. Over the past Summer, there were so many violent acts going on, especially in the Black community. I would have vivid nightmares of these terrible crimes and it impacted my spirit greatly. I hear so many people preach “Black Lives Matter”, but yet the Black community is still divided. I wrote this poem because I wanted to voice how I feel about these situations, and the best way I can express myself is through writing. I want to know what it will take for the Black community to really show the world that Black lives really do matter. I hope that this poem can touch at least one, if not many souls.

My goals as an artist to continue to grow in every way that I can. I am hoping to publish a book when I graduate from this University. While I am still here, I want to do everything that I can to become a better writer. I want to get as much exposure as I can, and I hope that my poems and my book can impact other lives in a positive way.

Thank you."
